Hillhouse Landfill and Lagoon Complex near Fleetwood

hillhouse landfillNPL took ownership and full responsibility in 2003 for the 110 acre Hillhouse Landfill and Lagoon complex near Fleetwood. The site was being used as an acid waste effluent treatment facility and a general industrial waste tip. The introduction of new legislation meant that this no longer complied with modern-day operational practices.

NPL resolved to manage the client from this newly redundant site and, following a comprehensive due diligence process, took freehold ownership and day-to-day operational management responsibility. NPL subsequently worked closely with the Environment Agency to facilitate the transfer of the Waste Management Licence from the client to NPL, effectively managing the exit for the client and taking over full responsibility for the site. Due to the types of waste previously deposited at the site, the Waste Management Licence will be in place for the next 60 years prior to the site being officially signed off by the regulatory authorities. As the site was deemed not to be 'core business' for the client, the ability to dispense with liability with a company who had a strong track record and an exemplary environmental record, was extremely attractive.

NPL is now working to achieve a comprehensive capping of the site, installation of a full leachate and landfill gas system, with a proposed innovative riverside country park restoration scheme. To reduce the financial liability of the client, NPL is promoting the importation of inert waste materials to effect the restoration, while providing an income stream to facilitate the works.
