Background
NPL Estates Ltd, one of the UK's leading brownfield regeneration companies has acquired the 1700 acre site at Ardeer in Ayrshire. Through a Partnership Agreement with North Ayrshire Council, a Draft Masterplan was submitted to NAC Planning in Feb 2007. NPL are currently working through the issues raised from this with their consultant Enviros and other parties. This web site is designed to assist in the dissemination of information relating to the project, enabling the local community and local interest groups to gather information on this exciting project.
Consultation
Successful community consultations were held in Stevenston and Irvine in 2006. At these events NPL showcased 4 possible options for the Masterplan and invited comments from visitors.
Questionnaires were also issued to those who attended and the summary findings of the consultations were as follows:
- 81% of those surveyed lived within a 5 mile radius of the site with over a third actually working on the peninsula.
- 85% were in agreement for a version of option 3 to be taken forward.
Concerns expressed
- Will the development bring the demise of the existing employment?
Answer - No, Option 3 actually allows for future expansion of the current employers on the peninsula and any employment growth is encouraged by NPL Estates.
- Is the development feasible given the factory use on the peninsula?
Answer - Yes, after consultation with the owners and the Health & Safety Executive, Option 3 takes recognition of the plant's Safeguarding and COMAH zones and this has shaped the development option.
Potential
- Given that the area has been closed to the public for so long, there is a very positive attitude towards tidying up the site and making it accessible to the public.
- The general opinion is that the area has been allowed to remain derelict with no investment, therefore all job opportunities and investments are welcome.
Future Timetable
Following the consultations NPL having worked further with North Ayrshire Council, Irvine Bay URC and other stakeholders, have enhanced and defined the preferred option further as available below.
This option has been formally submitted to North Ayrshire Council together with supporting information for consideration.
An Executive Summary of the Masterplan documents and recent press release are also available to download below.
